Hoodia

The Hoodia Gordonii is a succulent that is native to the Kalahari Desert in several African countries. It’s a spiny, smelly cactus that is covered in thorns and flesh-colored flowers. Although not known for its beauty, the hoodia cactus gained popularity as a weight loss supplement in the early 2000s. This was after it was discovered that a hunter-gatherer group in South Africa and Namibia have been eating pieces of the cactus stems since the 1930s  to suppress hunger on long hunting trips. Since then, hoodia has been used in various supplements to help naturally reduce appetite. More studies need to be done to determine why this is. It's suggested that it may have something to do with certain molecules in the plant that stimulate the nervous system and signal your brain to trick you into feeling full. Hoodia is sold in tea, tablet, powder, and even patch form.
